With the process of centrifugal casting involving gravity pulling molten metal into a mold via gravity and spinning action, the process could create very complete products with a high consistency rate from one end of the part to the other. The centrifugal process spreads the molten metal through the cast very evenly if the spinning process is managed evenly without any sudden jerking or movement. The gravity forces simply do all the work for the process within the mold it is poured and forms within. However, there are other advantages that occur as well with centrifugal casting that many are not fully aware of. These include:
1. Stronger Product
Parts cast through centrifugal casting processes tend to have a higher density internally, and that makes them stronger. Depending on the spin direction, one can control the flow as well as how the metal solidifies in the cast, making sure every aspect of the mold fills evenly. That produces an internal structure that binds and hardens with greater complexity. The result gives the product use higher durability and stress-handling capability. Secondly, the purity of the metal in a centrifugal cast tends to avoid contamination. That increases purity of the cast, it gets rid of bubbles and porosity which can cause cracking and weaknesses, and the cast product forms stronger in a uniform fashion versus unevenly.
2. Less Contamination
The purity of the metal in a centrifugal cast tends to reduce contamination. Aside from the increased purity of the cast, it gets rid of bubbles and porosity which can cause cracking and weaknesses, and the cast product forms stronger in a uniform fashion versus unevenly. The actual cleaning out of contamination is due to gravity. Lighter materials stay closer to the center of a centrifugal system and heavier material moves to the outer possibility of the spin. Since metal will be heavier, the crud ends up at the top of the cast and can be trimmed off easily at the end of the casting. The results end up being a very high purity cast with almost no contamination inside.
3. Overall Improved Quality
With the above benefits occurring, the overall value of the cast product produced increases. And that provides greater value for dollars spent on each unit cast and bought through that same process. It also means longer life for the money paid because units with high purity fail far less than with other casting methods and higher rates of impurity. The process and production take less time as well, and the consumption of metal used to make the castings tends to be less, reducing the cost of production notably.
Note, however, even with the above benefits, centrifugal casting does have its limits of possibilities, which is why it does not automatically work for every casting job out there. Obviously, the size of the cast can be a limiting factor. If the mold can be reasonably made and spun, then the method does not work. The shape of a cast can be a complicating factor as well for very much the same reason. So, structure casts with gridwork, for example, probably would not be doable with a centrifugal casting process.
Centrifugal casting can be applied in different ways too. Spin casting is the most common, where the molten metal is spun into the cast while in liquid form and gravity does its work. Chilled casting, on the other hand, is a shock method where the mold is extremely cold, and the hot metal practically flash-freezes while it is poured into the cast and being spun. Continuous casting is a third method that tends to be best for efficient mass production. This process involves pouring lots of casts at the same time and then cooling them simultaneously. The parts are then cut off as needed for individual units.
